    WHAT EXACTLY IS COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY?

Cosmetic dermatology focuses on the appearance of the skin, particularly of the face and neck, but anywhere on the body. It may also be known as aesthetic medicine or aesthetic dermatology. A cosmetic dermatologist can use different treatments and devices, including lasers and needling.

WHEN MEDICAL DERMATOLOGY AND COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY  DO THEY CROSS OVER?

Medical dermatology and cosmetic dermatology do differ. Cosmetic dermatology works on ultimately helping aesthetically, while medical dermatology is more concerned with the treatment of skin disease.

There is some  ” tool box” crossover – for example, when treating hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), muscle-relaxing injections may be used to arrest the sweat glands via the nerves that trigger sweating. This is considered a medical treatment for excess sweating, but using the same tools that a cosmetic dermatologist or cosmetic physician might use to stop a deep frown line from progressing.

Most dermatologists can do both, though typically, one will be preferred over the other in practice, making some dermatologists specialists in some other skin related areas.

Cosmetic dermatology is a quickly growing area of medicine, with many dermatologists having at least some portion of their practice in this area.
