How chin liposuction can enhance the face

Chin liposuction can help to redefine the chin and help your face to appear more contoured.  A double chin is one of the key indicators of age that we have.

Dr Rich removes the small amount of fat causing the double chin from the chin and neck area, with often a clear impact on the profile of the jaw and neckline.

The signs of ageing & chin liposuction

A double chin can appear before other signs of ageing, and now that we’re constantly photographing ourselves from unflattering angles, the double chin is now a constant companion.

One of the advantages of reducing a double chin is adjusting your perceived age. That might be the age you see when you look in the mirror or how old others think you are.

Chin liposuction takes under an hour for the procedure, and recovery usually over a week or two, depending on the patient.   Chin liposuction IS a surgical procedure and does come with risks, as do all surgeries. We can comprehensively take you through the procedure at ENRICH, explain the risks, and see if chin liposuction is for you.

    Removing a puffy-looking double chin

A double chin can create a puffy-looking face, even if you’re fit and healthy, without any water retention or swelling of the area. Puffiness caused by fat deposits can make for an unhealthy appearance, even in younger people. These fat deposits are mainly genetic – if double chins run in the family, it doesn’t matter how slim you are; the double chin stays.  The procedure smooths and refines the jawline, offering a jawline that is sharper.

Making the most of your facial features

Many of us have hidden gems, including beautiful jaws or facial structures that a double chin could obscure as we age. Your dermatologist can suggest facial reduction using liposuction and other skin-tightening and anti-ageing treatments that may work for you.

Other treatments we use with chin liposuction

If you are undergoing double chin liposuction as an antiageing procedure, then there are like to be other ways to make the most of your features. We can tighten, smooth and tone skin, remove age and sunspots, remove signs of skin damage, and address large pores, wrinkles and scarring. Liposuction is a surgery, so if you have even the slightest apprehension, we may be able to find a non-surgical option that is right for you.

What’s the difference between a double chin and a turkey neck?

A double chin refers to fat deposits underneath the chin, sitting on the neck area rather than the chin specifically. We call it a double chin because it hangs underneath our natural chin. A double chin is made up of fat, while a turkey neck is  loose skin that tends to run from the collarbone to the point of the chin, like a tent, whereas the double chin is a bulge.

A turkey neck results from ageing skin that has lost its elasticity, so it sags and wrinkles like the turkey’s wattle. (The wattle is a turkey’s dangling neck.)

We sometimes see a double chin and turkey neck together, where significant skin sagging and fatty deposits create a hanging bulge.

After liposuction, the skin naturally retracts around its contents unless the collagen and elastin in the skin are stretched and unable to spring back. We can use skin tightening treatments and liposuction to help treat a turkey neck and double chin. In some cases, a more involved procedure may be necessary for a satisfying outcome; however, a consultation will reveal what is possible in your particular case.

    Liposuction alternatives

Fat removal and body contouring have come a long way, and we now have several other effective options for removing fat. We have radio frequency fat-reducing technology and fat-dissolving injections at our fingertips for those for whom liposuction isn’t a viable option for whatever reason, including the costs of liposuction

At ENRICH Clinic in Melbourne, we can combine facial liposuction with other procedures as part of an ongoing anti-aging plan or can use it as a standalone treatment – it’s up to you.

Anti-ageing is where a cosmetic clinic comes into its own. We love our range of anti-ageing treatments, and so do our clients. There are many to choose from, and it will depend heavily on which element of anti-ageing you are focused.

Because the ageing process affects the areas of the face differently, we treat each area separately.

    Elements of facial ageing include:

    • The development of fine lines and wrinkles
    • Loss of fat volume creating a sallow look of the cheeks and around the eyes
    • Loss of collagen and elastin contributing to wrinkling and sagging
    • Deepening of grooves

To combat each of these, we can use a collection of tools that address one or more element. Fine lines and wrinkles can be softened using resurfacing (makes all skin the same ‘height’), filled in with dermal fillers, or collagen boosted with wave-based treatments.

We can arrest deep grooves and wrinkles as they are forming with anti-wrinkle injections, keeping your face smoother for longer.

Fat in our face creates a more youthful appearance, so dermal filler has a huge role to play in our anti-ageing strategies. The hollows left due to diminishing fat volume in the cheeks can be plumped back up with dermal filler injections, as can the tear troughs and nasolabial folds (the lines that join your mouth and nose).

    Facial redness

Redness is the result of blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. There is regular redness – this may be genetic, maybe you run hot – then we have redness caused by inflammation, known as rosacea.

We have very effective laser treatments that remove the tiny blood vessels, reducing the visible impact of being hot, flushed or generally blotchy or red. This treatment works the same for any blood vessel condition, minor or major.

If you have red cheeks or a red face all the time,  you may benefit from a consultation with a dermatologist to look into the cause. Sometimes a skin treatment isn’t the most appropriate way forward here.

    Rough or dry skin

The outer layer of skin is by design made up of hard, dead skin cells – the keratinised layer of skin that protects us from the outside world. Keratinised skin, because it’s dead skin cells, can easily become dry, flakey and rough. Think of elbows, knees and heels.

These dead skin cells can also lead to face appearing dry, dull and lacklustre. The solution is to get rid of the skin cells. We achieve this with several tools, for example, laser resurfacing, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. The top layer of dull skin is removed, revealing the fresh skin underneath.

    Acne or acne scarring

Acne and acne scarring are two very distinct problems with individual solutions. Acne is an active skin infection, while acne scarring is the result of a specific skin injury. Acne scars develop due to a space created underneath the skin, in the pore, by the infection, that is then filled in with scar tissue.

We have several strategies for managing acne, including hormonal management and very targeted skin treatments. Skin treatments include light- and wave-based devices to kill bacteria and promote skin health.

Acne scar treatments often include collagen remodelling to change how scars appear, but depending on the type of scar, we can also work to resurface the skin.

We are skin experts who prefer to use non-invasive strategies to achieve your skin goals. We have such an amazing array of tools at our disposal, so come in for a consultation so we can show some of them off to you! We feel confident that we can help you have more beautiful skin, whatever that means to you.

  • What are ‘chinkles’ and how do I get rid of them?

What are ‘chinkles’ and how do I get rid of them?

chin wrinkles chinklesBingo wings, cankles, and now chinkles – the nicknames for our ageing bodies and faces never seem to end, with the latest thing to worry about being chinkles – chin wrinkles.

What is a chin wrinkle, you may ask? These wrinkles are the lines that appear on the sides of your chin near to where your laugh lines sit, but in a diagonal triangle around your mentalis chin muscle.

Whether you get chinkles will largely depend on the shape of your jaw and chin, and the way your face moves when you talk, laugh and eat. The muscles on the chin can start to weaken over time, volume is lost, and collagen production naturally slows, leaving all of our skin and muscle hanging around more than it used to, allowing the development of chinkles. This is normal, however, some of you aren’t excited about this process and are having treatments to firm up the chin and soften or remove chinkles.

    How do we treat chinkles?

The chin is one of the strongest elements of our faces, with a sharp jawline being seen as attractive in both men and women. Being ‘chinless’ either with a small or drooping chin, or a double chin, can diminish the jaw and chin profile. Bone and tissue loss over time only exacerbates this.

To treat chinkles, we use volumising dermal fillers and then laser/radiofrequency skin tightening treatments for the top of the skin. The aim is to tighten skin, while also increasing the production of collagen inside the skin cells. Our favourite dermal filler for chin treatments is typically a substance that works as a deep hydration tool and a collagen-stimulating filler. Lasers and radiofrequency treatments will improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and tighten tissue.

A chinkle can be caused by frequent (normal) contraction of the mentalis muscle at the tip of your chin, also known as the ‘pouting muscle’. This muscle raises the lower lip, but can push out the chin, resulting in a witchy look. Additionally, this muscle contraction can cause orange-peel chin (‘chellulite’), which looks a bit like ‘chin cellulite’. These dimples can be eradicated with muscle-relaxant wrinkle reducing treatment that stop this contraction, reducing both the size of the mentalis muscle and the appearance of chin dimples.

  • Top 10 uses of dermal fillers

Top 10 uses of dermal fillers

    1. dermal filler for brow liftCheek dermal fillers

Cheeks are the number one area that people have treated with dermal filler, particularly as we age, since the cheeks start to lose volume. The benefits are that the cheeks – particularly when there is sufficient fat and volume – make us look more youthful. The cheeks tend to lose volume over time due to the effects of a loss of collagen and gravity.

    2. Lip dermal fillers

Lip enhancements using dermal filler are very common and can boost lip volume and shape with a few carefully placed dermal filler injections. Plumper lips can add a youthful touch to the face, particularly when lips are thinner or there are lines around the lips. There are several ways to accentuate lips, but having an experienced, skilled doctor with an artful eye doing your injections is your number one tool. The ratios between your upper and lower lips will then be perfect and nobody will notice.

    3. Chin dermal fillers

The chin makes a huge – but subtle – impact on your profile. The chin has a specific ratio in the structure of the face that must be equal for symmetry and our perception of ‘attractiveness’. Ratios that are off can cause the face to seem unbalanced, however remember that this is just a guideline: your face has its own unique characteristics that make it beautiful. A chin that balances out your facial features can accentuate what you already have.

    4. Brow lift using dermal fillers

A brow lift using dermal filler on the outer brow can raise the eyebrow up just a touch, creating a more youthful-looking eye.

    5. Nasolabial fold dermal fillers

The nasolabial folds – the creases that join the sides of your nose and mouth – can be caused or deepened by volume loss in the cheeks. This can be both prevented and treated at the same time by adding volume to the cheeks (see number one), but also treating the nasolabial folds themselves.

    6. Marionette ‘sad face’ mouth line dermal fillers

The small lines that eventually appear next to our mouths that create the ‘sad face’ look are one of the top treated areas of the face. These marionette lines are treated more as we age, since the lines are a result of a loss of collagen and the effects of gravity.

    7. Forehead, temple and frown line dermal fillers

The forehead is an area of our faces that can develop horizontal or vertical (or both) lines, sometimes quite deep. These lines and creases can be filled in with dermal filler and softened considerably, while the temples can have volume added.

    8. Jowl dermal fillers

Over time, your jowls start to hang, with the jawline looking less firm. Treatments with dermal filler can straighten out the jawline, creating a more youthful appearance, helping to buoy the cheeks up. This can be combined with cheek dermal filler.

    9. Tear troughs and bags under the eye dermal fillers

Applying dermal filler injections to the under-eye area can immediately remove or diminish ‘bags’ under the eyes, creating a more rested appearance.

    10. Dermal fillers for non-surgical rhinoplasty (‘nose job’)

Another very popular use of dermal filler treatments includes the nonsurgical rhinoplasty (‘nose job’), which can fill in bumps and lumps, evening out the nose without surgery.

Dermal fillers can make a profound difference to a face.
